Paragliding was introduced into Nepal in 1995-96 when some foreign visiting pilots decided to explore flying possibilities around the Pokhara Valley. The sport with its self advertising nature soon charmed the country 'adventurists' and has gained enormous popularity since.
Nepal's vast and diverse geographic features offer a variety of sites and absolute flying conditions, almost anything a Para glider pilot could wish for. The subtropical temperatures are always comfortably mild conditions even in the cold months. Plenty of thermals and the long valleys that are common in Nepal, produce perfect 'cloud streets' that are ideal for paragliding. Paragliding season in Nepal runs from November through February, the best months being November and December. A trip will take you over some of the best scenery on earth, as you share airspace with Himalayan griffin vultures, eagles, kites and float over mystery shrouded monasteries, ancient temples, beautiful turquoise lakes, raging rivers, exotic jungles and old villages along the 'sky highway'. The tree line in Nepal is at an incredible 3,900 m because of its altitude and monsoon. The local microclimate, controlled by the numerous lakes in the valley, is unique, and makes it even more conducive for paragliding.
Pokhara is the most celebrated destination for paragliding in Nepal and is fast attaining world recognition. The beautiful city at the foot of the Annapurna Himalaya gives an opportunity for a commanding aerial view of the Mahabharat range that comprises 3 of the 10 highest peaks in the world - Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Manasulu, all over 8000m.
Himalayan Frontiers Nepal works closely with its sister organisation Annapurna Paragliding P. Ltd that specialises in paragliding training courses and offers services such as tandem joyrides, Para trekking and Para hawking with their highly experienced and professional pilots.
Tandem Flight involves a professional pilot flying with a passenger, who sit on two separate harnesses that are attached to each other and the wing. Harnesses are very comfortable and feel like arm chairs. The pilot does all the riding while the passenger sits back and relaxes, as the glider sails through the air. You can also take panoramic pictures for your life-time memories. And don't worry, this is NOT base jumping!! You will perform a gentle take-off and landing. No leaping off cliffs is required.......
The take-off point is Sarangkot, 2000 ft above Fewa Lake and 25 minute uphill jeep drive from Pokhara. Sarangkot is the best vantage point to get stunning views of the lake and the thickly forested hillsides and the 3 highest mountains in the north. We offer the following types of tandem flight:
This is the most basic downhill descent with gentle soaring and gives you first flight experience. The flight provides the thrill of high flight as we thermal up above Sarangkot in the company of eagles and vultures, over the surrounding countryside with the rice terraces, traditional villages and the people working in the fields, before floating over the lake. This flight can also offer the chance to do a little acrobatic flying (if you want to!) We finally land by the lake.
Duration: 30min
Ridge Buster is for people who want to experience more about paragliding and is recommended for those who have already flown a tandem flight. This flight offers you the chance to experience flying from one valley to another. Using thermals, clouds and birds to guide us, we take you on an unforgettable journey north of Pokhara towards the big mountains.
Duration: 1 hour
